Downtown Tempe Master Plan
The Downtown Tempe Master Plan is focused on the activation of the existing parks and public spaces throughout Downtown as a means to catalyze quality private development that will compliment the vision and capitol investment of the City. Downtown Tempe is the home of one of the largest public universities in the United States, Arizona State University. The student population in downtown Tempe is quite extensive, yet the positive economic impact is not realized at it’s highest potential.
The guiding principle behind the master plan is that a higher quality, better programmed and managed set of downtown public spaces will incentivize the private development community as well as the City to begin to develop a broader mix of land uses. This will begin to attract a broader audience of users and an expanded demographic of downtown residents that will utilize the newly activated spaces. The master plan is focused on the development of both public spaces interwoven within the fabric of the city blocks, as well as the renaissance of three existing large under-utilized, under-programmed and managed park spaces: the large Tempe Beach Park, the adjoining Tempe Center for the Arts and linear riverfront park, and the Gammage Theater.
